The Backyard Ale House officially will never receive a dime from me after reading an article from today's paper....they're hosting a Doherty rally there.

Yep the same goes for my house as well. Sucks because they had a great selection and it was a nice place.

I read the article, and to me there was no clear endorsement of Doherty on behalf of the restaurant. Just because a political fund-raiser is being held there doesn't mean squat. Doherty's campaign committee could have paid to reserve the place from 5 PM-7 PM that evening.

Sure and world peace is right around corner....Political parties are held in establishments that support the candidate....They are not free and yes they are paid for, but I have yet to see a party held in a place that didn't support the candidate....

I frequent the Ale House and will probably stop in on Friday and give the owner a little advice about hooking up with a side instead of staying neutral in politics.....Ask Cosgroves how they faired after they openly supported Doherty...Oh wait they went out of business last year.......Nobody went there because it was a Doherty hump hang out.

I'm impressed by you guys' political resolve. I draw the line at campaign signs in store windows for candidates I don't support, which I find more offensive than if they held an event there. And even then, I avoid them only while the sign's up. (Catalano's, if I remember right, had a McCain sign in their window this year.)

Anyhoo, not a huge loss for you IMHO after my weekend trip. While their beer selection is great, it's chock full of the same 24yo meathead-ish crows that seems to fill most bars around here. Plus, they were blasting bad hard rock which made it hard to talk, not really the craft-beer environment I was expecting. Plus, lots of big screen TVs with sports, not that I really mind that. I had to explain to a friend from NY how it wasn't a sports bar, and had a tough time. I'll go back on a weeknight or afternoon sometime when it may be quieter, and the patio they're opening up could be nice..

BTW, Is the school mentioned in that article the one on N. Main and Greenridge? What's the deal with that place? Someone told me Goodwill or someone owns it. I worry a similar abandoned fate will meet Marshall Elementary after they build the new school in Tripps Park.

It doesn't matter...the could have refused. Any place that shows any support of Doherty, directly or indirectly, is on my boycott list. I'm sure the owners must be supporters of Doherty, because with the way politics is in Scranton, Doherty would not reserve a place for a rally that was not run by supporters.

How wonderful it must be for you that you are in a position to hand select the source of your income and have the financial leeway to be able to refuse revenue so cavalierly. Can you see the rest of the valley struggling from that moral high horse? The majority of us little people don't really give a shiit, as long as the check clears.

This is how I viewed it as well. We're in a recession. Any place of business would be foolish to turn down a large event that would help to keep them afloat for yet another day. Some in Scranton take political grudges way too far and way too personally. Neighbors of mine had "McCain/Palin" signs on their front lawns while my next-door neighbors and I had "Obama '08" plastered on our cars. Did that cause a rift between us? No. I'm pro-life but have pro-choice friends. I'm friends with people who oppose same-sex civil equality. Sometimes you need to look beyond political ideologies to bigger and better things. I will STILL try out this business someday before I leave town, and I will NOT dwell upon the fact that they hosted an unpopular incumbent mayoral candidate. How many Republicans still eat at Cooper's, even though they've hosted the Clintons? How many Democrats are going to go to ASU, even though they caused a big ruckus by "snubbing" Obama?

Being friends with someone is different from patronizing a business. I have neighbors that have Doherty signs in their yard, I still like them, and get along with them fine. But with a business, where I will spend my money, and there is plenty of competition out there, I will not spend my money at a business that chooses to take the other side in a political election. There are plenty of options around if I want go out and have a few drinks or something to eat, so why would I spend my money at a place that openly hosts fundraisers for the mayor?

I'm sure you would do the same. What if a restaurant/bar had big George Bush signs on their building or hosted rallies for Sarah Palin or Rick Santorum? Would you go there, or would you go to a different place that didn't openly support someone you oppose?

You honestly can't tell the difference between doing business with a campaign and actually endorsing the candidate?
