So many great things have been going on here in Wilkes Barre. River Street Waterfront and Coal Street Park to name a few. Now they are finalizing plans for an interconnecting trail around the whole city.

Trail loops seen as links to Wilkes-Barre’s features

By RORY SWEENEY rsweeney@timesleader.com

Engineers from Rettew displayed on Thursday a finalized proposal for the city’s trail master plan, which would create roughly a 12-mile loop around the entire city with two- to three-mile loops within it, all of which would connect to schools, parks and other local attractions.

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council, which funded the study, hopes to have the master plan completed by March. The draft should be finished by January, after which will be a period for public comment.

A copy of the map should be available for download in early January on the Web site of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, which organized funding for the project.

The plan creates six interconnecting trails that circumnavigate the city’s neighborhoods, from Parsons and Miners Mills to the East End down Sherman Street. The trails would also connect with the Luzerne County National Trail, the Susquehanna Warrior Trail, the Delaware and Lehigh Trail and the Back Mountain Trail.

Wilkes-Barre is where I've decided I want to return to in the future to open my business, restore my home, raise my family, and run for office. I'm sorry, but Scranton's incessant negative aura has just cost it yet another potentially promising new resident. Wilkes-Barre does indeed have its fair share of "issues", but just look at how much progress has been made in the past five years alone. Wilkes-Barre's downtown core is very easily-defined, very walkable, and is really starting to shape up. You can't say the same about Scranton's core. You can buy decent homes in Wilkes-Barre for $75,000. That would be $100,000 in Scranton now. To me there's just more advantages to living in Wilkes-Barre right now over Scranton. One drawback that immediately comes to mind is that the lower elevation than Scranton brings a bit less snow. As a snow lover that might be irksome.

Sounds interesting. More trails the better. I often walk the loop...um, more like a rectangle, ovre Pierce street, then I walk the dyke down to Market street, then I walk the River Common, and back home. It is a nice, scenic walk.

C.V. just reported that "Bottlenecks" will be opening a tavern at the old Wendy's location, next door to Barnes and Nobles.
