Where is the Panther Valley ? I came upon this reference here: Pennsylvania Coal Mine History (http://www.tccweb.org/penncoal.htm - broken link), while reading of the The Lattimer Massacre.

Carbon County. Panther Valley High School is in Lansford. The article on Lattimer Massacre is one of many at this site on the history of anthracite coal mining. Many towns are mentioned. Google maps will show their location as required. It is basically south of Hazelton in the southern PA anthricite mining area. NEPA/Scranton area mines and miners would have been quite similar.

It is pretty sobering reading about what many immigrants/residents endured. These people were the ancestors of many current NEPA residents. Interesting to compare to current immigration.

I was out for a drive last weekend and passed the memorial sign for the Twin Shaft Mine Cave In, Pittston. I pulled over and read the sign. When I pulled in to turn around well, the feeling was that I was perhaps treading on so many graves. That is private property now? Coming home I did a bit of reading on that disaster and followed links to a few others. And yes, the names of those killed are the same names of the people I know now. The children or as one article stated, " the boy", as they didn't know their names, was heartbreaking. Work ethic. What our nation was built upon.
