I don't know what part of the south you're coming from but I moved here from the Dallas, TX area and the weather is very similar - just a touch milder. When Dallas gets ice in the winter, VA gets snow but it's about the same frequency; this past winter was unusual. You won't have to change your wardrobe and habits much - maybe just add a layer.
