I think most people already knew, but I tried to search the forum and google just could not find answer.

I just notice that Cox and Comcast service areas don't overlap. Do they have agreement that they don't enter each others' service area? I have crappy Cox and my neighborhood does not have FIOS. I want to reduce my cable bill but have nowhere to go.

I have run into the same problem. Fairfax County and Stafford County is under Cox while Prince William has Comcast for the cable provider. FIOS is available in some neighborhoods but not all at this time.

Well you could go with satellite, they don't have the area restrictions that the cable companies do.

My neighbor has satellite, but they said they have problems during snow storms and heavy rain. Besides, I need internet and I heard that satellite internet is slow.

When cable TV first came to town...local governments granted a monopoly to the company that "wired" the County. I guess no company would lay out the big bucks to do it otherwise. Part of the deal was that the cable company would provide "public access" channnels. That's why you can watch School Board and Board of Supervisors meetings on TV.

Media General Cable wired Fairfax County in the late 70's/early 80's...Cox bought out Media General about 10 years ago. It was just pay TV back then, no phone or internet.

Not sure how FiOS figures into all this....maybe these monopoly agreements expired? Or maybe Verizon bought off the right people?
