I am thinking about taking a job in Dunn Loring, but I'm not sure where would be the best place to live.

I am a young professional in my mid 20s. I will have access to a car and would like to live near a metro.

There are a few areas I am looking at:

1. Dunn Loring - quick commute to work, but from what I've read, it's not a real community.

2. Ballston or Virginia Square- lots of young professionals, but looks like it might be a long commute and a little pricy.

What would you recommend? Also what are some good apartment communities in both areas? And where are some good places to find roommates?

Thanks!

Ballston and Virginia Square are part of "Orange Line" Arlington - nicknamed after the Metrorail line they share - which is the epicenter for younger professionals in NOVA. Ballston and Clarendon in particular are the most popular.

A Dunn Loring-to-Ballston commute, for example, wouldn't be bad at all...especially if your employer is within walking/short bus distance from the Dunn Loring Metro station. In fact, according to wmata.com, it would be only 11 minutes on the train itself.

You'll have to decide whether an immediately accessible after hours social life is worth the premium over an (even more) convenient commute to work. I'm sorry that I don't know much about specific apartments. What is your budget? Craigslist is a popular source to find roommates.

Ballston to Dunn Loring is a pretty easy commute, and Virginia Square is just a few extra minutes. If traveling by car, the slow spot is going to be on I-66W at Fairfax Drive, where you merge coming from Ballston, but other than that, it's a relatively quick reverse commute. The return commute in the evening can be slow on I-66, from the point where the Toll Road merges, but there are alternative routes, such as Lee Highway to Washington Boulevard, or Route 50.
