I've been researching apartments in the NOVA area over the past month or so and came across a mention of realtors in the DC area who help renters find an apartment on the landlords' dime. I'm not quite ready to officially look for an apartment yet, but I think everything's going to happen pretty fast once the ball starts rolling. Could anyone help me figure out who these "free apartment realtors" are so I can have a list handy when I need it? Thanks!

Any will be free for the seeker (they take their commission from the landlord).

That said, I found the prices to be much higher on realtor rented properties than the places I found through CL. I think landlords raised their asking prices to compensate for losing a month's rent to the realtor. I saw 3-4 places and gave up on finding a place through the realtor.

Found a place on CL, and moved in 3 weeks later.

Wow. Thanks for the input. If anyone has anything else to add, feel free. I do still want to look into it just so I can have as many options available as possible. And so I can get a place QUICK if I have to (in case I get a job offer with short notice).

Do both, especially on short notice. The rental market is getting tight right now in certain areas and you want the best exposure to listings. No one should charge you to gain access to anything on the market as a rental. That said, if you decide to rent via Craigslist, just send a nice thank you email to any agent you've been working with!
