Holy cow--they signed a 20-year contract for the entire two-tower property? Reston just seems to be getting more and more of these government agencies. Funny how they all seem to be zeroing in on that one town.

Hmmm, interesting question.

The article says "The agency will roll other national offices, including posts at the Pentagon and 3100 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington, into the new space as part of the Defense Department’s ongoing efforts to consolidate many of its leased and owned properties nationwide."

I italicized two sections that seem to indicate some of the jobs are moving here from other states. But it's not at all clear how many that would be.

Yes, that was my point.

I think a complex in Alexandria was under consideration too.

I think DIA used to have a big presence in PG County also.

I hear any agency or company that deals with classified material moves out to the burbs because the buildings are far from the road and can have more secure campuses. But I'm not sure why they seem to choose Reston so often. Is it just because it's closer to DC than Ashburn, or do they cut a nice deal of some sort?

No, it's because they're so much closer to the Macaroni Grill on Reston Parkway!

How can that be? There are a heck of a lot of buildings in downtown DC that deal in classified material, including that one at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I don't think any of them will be moving anytime soon. In the cyber age physical distance makes little difference. The Chinese can get access whether you're in downtown DC or in a deep hole out in the Nevada desert. Security based on physical location is a very quaint 90s concept.

Many reasons...maybe they got a sweet lease deal...good road access....greater density of cleared workers....proximity to contractors....proximity to public transportation....closer to other agencies...closer to the lawmakers...

Why would any agency want to be out in sleepy Loudoun County?
