Hi. I'm mom to two goldens. I must tell you that not all goldens are good off leash and some do not like other smaller furry animals, like cats, squirrels, etc. I have had goldens for the past 20 years and one of the boys I have now will run the minute he gets a chance and doesn't like cats. He would just as soon eat one as look at one.

Amen to that. Too many puppies are abandoned in their first months of life for just those very things. I had one of mine chew a hole in a plaster wall and chew up the legs on my dining room table when he was a puppy. It was a trying time but we got through it.

I agree the "puppy-age" can be trying-my Siberian ate everything he could, including: ink well, lap desk (with all the tiny styrofoam stuffing), 4 lbs butter, my wallet, etc...

However, the joy of raising a pup, taking him to obedience classes, running/playing, teaching/learning, all outweigh that traumatic time, at least for me.

We'll see. I'm happy I posted the question, as it's given me a lot to consider. I've talked it over with my wife, and we're both considering whether we should get the pup, or try to rescue an older dog, or consider an older one from a breeder.

Thanks!

Chris

Check out the Google ads on here for them. Just curious why you'd especially want one imported from Norway. Perhaps you want one slightly grumpy who doesn't say much?

We recently adopted a dog through Hart (www.hart90.org) and having had dogs previously I knew I did not want a puppy. My husband and son fell in love with a lab that was 8 mos old. The rescue group suggested we foster the dog for a few days and after 3 days it convinced me even more that we did not want a puppy. After chewing up 3 pairs of shoes, knocking over the trash can and spreading trash, coffee grounds, etc all over the kitchen floor, destroying a couple of my son's toys..... my husband and son came to the same conclusion.

We adopted a 1 1/2 yr old Austrailian cattle dog mix. She sheds very little, is a calm dog but certainly plays and has quite the personality. We couldn't be happier. Cola - Adopted on 8/7/2010

I would strongly suggest that maybe fostering a dog would give your wife a better idea of what type of dog will fit into your lifestyle here in VA

Good luck!
