The 14th anniversary of the Shenandoah Valley Hot Air Balloon, Wine & Music Festival is October 15-17, 2010. It's held on the rolling fields of Long Branch in Clarke County. In addition to the balloons, the annual event provides a wide variety of entertainment over the weekend.

Some of the balloons have unique whimsical shapes. They take to the skies at sunrise (7:30 am) and again at sunset (4:30 pm), weather permitting. Staging begins approximately one half hour prior to flights. There will also be tethered hot air balloons on-site for spectators to enjoy the interior of the balloons and the opportunity to experience a tethered ride (again, weather permitting).

Admission to the event is $15 per person. There are extra fees for wine, beer, and a Historic House Tour. Admission is free for children 12 years old and younger.

Thanks for the heads-up. The balloon festivals (and the Bealeton Flying Circus) have been on my to-see list for years - maybe I can get to this one!

Thanks for the recommendation. I was just talking to my hubby about this the other night. We are thinking of taking our girls. Pretty sure they would love it!

Has anyone been to this? Do you need to arrive an hour before they take off? How close is parking to where the staging area is?

Also, is the morning show or the afternoon show better? 7:30 a.m. sounds a little early, especially when you factor in driving there. But, if it's worthwhile, I'll do it.

We have done both the morning and afternoon. I think the morning is a little better as (in general) it is less windy and it is easier for the balloons to take off. Parking is VERY close to the staging area if you get there early. If you get there late, you'll be parking out on the grass (field) and will have a bit of a walk.

We're going to the festival on Sunday morning. Not sure how I feel about getting up at 5 am to drive there though!
