Looking for a local charity to donate some items to (not used clothing, but good stuff, like cribs and new toys in boxes). Internet research not helpful, and I don't have time anyway. Does anyone know of - as in, have personal experience with - a good charity that operates locally to help families and children living in poverty, and which accepts such items? Please don't suggest the obvious ones, like Goodwill - I'm not stupid, I know about those. I know there are a lot of families in need, but it's actually hard to find a group that works directly with them. I would prefer a non-religious charity. If you know of one, let me know. I could sell this stuff on craigslist, but would prefer to donate.

Most local charities deal in food and cash, not so much in household items and are generally affiliated with religion. However, UCM, is multi-denominational. You might give them a call. With the holidays coming up the new toys should be well received. Habitat for Humanity might take the crib.

Shelter House in Fairfax County will take cribs and toys. Here's their full list (however, they say to contact them to confirm a specific need before they'll take an item).

Possibly something like homestretch (Page Not Found Fairfax county (and I'm sure the other local counties but ffx is huge ^_^) has a whole list of domestic violence resources at Domestic Violence Resources*- Fairfax County, Virginia which is generally a good place to find some programs similar to what you're looking for (domestic violence as there are more than a handful of resources 'for women and families fleeing from abusive relationships/situations')

I second the domestic violance shelters. I have donated all my toys etc to one off of RT 1 in Alexandria. I can provide you the address/phone number if you need it. Some of these places are hard to find, for obvious reasons.

I know you said a non-religious one but Western Fairfax Christian Ministries does a lot for ALL the Chantilly/Centreville area, despite their name. They are a nonprof and do help all, regardless of affiliations. They have a thrift store in Chantilly so take items, either for families, or to sell there to make money to help families. So, if you're in this area, check out their website for more information, Welcome to WFCM!

Yikes, am I the only person put off by the "I'm not stupid" and "I don't have time" from the OP? Sheesh.

Anyway, the Vietnam Vets will come right to your door to pick up (esp. good for those who, well, don't have time...). Just put your things in bags and label them "V.V.A." Go to Free Clothing Donation Pick Up - Donate Clothes & Household Items to schedule. That is, if you can make time to do that.

Rude posts like this are the reason I so rarely write anything. If you can't answer the question without insulting the OP, then how about don't answer at all.

Another great charity is BARN...can't remember what it stands for but it provides housing and jobs training for women who have been abused or are otherwise homeless and their children. It is part of the St Benedictine monastery in Bristow, but is nondenominational as far as whom they offer assistance to. We donated our car to them, and I really like that they actually use the goods, instead of selling them and using the proceeds (which I know really doesn't make much of a difference, but at least I know the families will be getting the full value of what I donate without having any taken off for administrative fees and the like). Their website is Temporary Housing and Supportive Services For Wome - Transitional Housing BARN - Bristow, Virginia

?? On the contrary, I thought you were insulting potential respondents.
And I didn't just post [what was perceived by you to be] "rude" comments, I posted information. Easy, there.
