So it's October now and one of the best holidays is fast approaching, Halloween. What do you all like to do for Halloween? Are there any good haunted houses/hayrides/etc. in the area?

Cox Farms in Centreville, Pumpkinville in Leesburg, Great Country Farms in Bluemont all have great festivals for the fall. Check out their sites. Enjoy!

Here are a few that have been mentioned in this forum over the years:

Activities for Children:

Usually the malls have trick or treat nights or events. Dulles Town Center has tv ads for some sort of event, I'm not sure what it is. Reston Town Center and Brambleton Town Center usually do something as well.

Cox Farm and Great Country Farms usually have an assortment of activities that are very popular with kids.

Boo at the Zoo (at the National Zoo) is also supposed to be a big hit. So is Pumpkinville at Leesburg Animal Park

Local churches often have halloween parties (FYI, sometimes they have a strong religious slant.)

Claude Moore Park has Halloween crafts, story time and other kids activities. You can find similar events at other parks--check your Counties Park and Recreation web sites.

The Del Ray community in Alexandria has a Halloween parade for children. They close off Mt Vernon Ave and the kids walk down it, then get snacks at the end of the route.

Here's a list cdmurphy put together of pumpkin patches, mazes, etc. https://www.city-data.com/forum/north...mazes-etc.html

G-rated or PG-rated activities:

Vienna Halloween Parade (this is a fairly big parade, it's been an annual event for more than 60 years). Vienna Halloween Parade in Vienna, Virginia

Reston Nature Center and Algonkian Park both have a Haunted House/Forest. These are photos from the Haunted Forest at Algonkian, to give you an idea of what these are like:

Cox Farms has "Fields of Fear" at night.

A popular event in Maryland is Markoff's Haunted Forest. Markoff's Haunted Forest.

Another popular event is Haunted Nightmares in Winchester (at Hill High Farm).

Adult Activities:

Georgetown is usually closed off to traffic on Halloween. Party time! Parking, Traffic Restrictions in Georgetown for Halloween - washingtonpost.com

Drag Race in Dupont Drag Race

There are usually quite a few parties at local taverns, etc. See On-Tap Magazine's online site for a list.

Trick or Treating:

Trick-or-treating is big in some neighborhoods, and not at all in others. If you live in an apartment complex, you probably wont have any (or maybe just a few local kids). If your neighbors are putting up decorations the day before, that's a sign that you'll probably have trick or treaters.

If your neigborhood doesn't participate, please take your kids to one of the malls or other community sites listed above. It's not such a great idea to drive your kids over to another town and drop them off to go trick or treating there.

Finally, after Halloween, here's a traditional event to get rid of extra candy:

They are also doing a Haunted Harbor over at National Harbor this year.

Not exactly a haunted house but there are some great pumpkin patches around here. We were just at Nalls Farmer's Market in Berryville this weekend and found the The Great Pumpkin.

Today's Groupon is for "Fields of Fear" at Cox Farms - one ticket for $7 ($15 value) - has to be used October 8 or 9. Only 15 hours and 44 minutes left to buy! Limit 2 per person.

Wonderful ideas! Does anyone know how to find out the Trick-or-Treat times for the various towns? I've tried Googling but have been unsuccessful.

Out in Cascades there's no set time. The littlest kids seem to go around first, more or less around dusk. Then the upper elementary kids, after it's dark. Sometimes older kids will come by about an hour or so later (but we don't get that many older kids, they like to go to parties instead).

We've never had any set times (Woodbridge, Manassas and Springfield). Pretty much when it starts to get dark is a good time to start.
