Last year we had a big snowstorm one week before christmas. I think that's the earliest I can remember I'm not sure

I hear you. Today definitely felt more like early-December than early-October.

I remember a big snowstorm on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) around '87 or '88. That's the earliest big snow I can recall.

Since I've been here (12 years), there's usually a dusting in December and then nothing until January or February.

The earliest I can remember was the snowstorm that Smithy77 mentioned. I made it to school after a 2-hr delay and then turned around and went home. Took me about 5 hours to get home on the school bus. My younger brother was in elementary school and they served him dinner before he managed to have a bus bring him home. That is not the norm, at all.

Official records:

Earliest Snowfall = Trace on Oct. 5, 1892; .03 inches on Oct. 10, 1979
Latest Snowfall = Trace on May 10, 1906; .5 inches on Apr. 28, 1898
Biggest Snowstorm = 28 inches, Jan. 1922 (official); 36 inches, Jan. 1772 (unofficial)

In my memory of over 40 years in this area, the Veteran's Day storm was the biggest early snowfall. We got about 11 inches officially as I recall, but because it surprised most with its intensity for so early in the season, its disruption was magnified. On the other hand, I have experienced entire winters here without any measurable snowfall, and I remember a President's Day weekend when the temperature hit 75 deg! Winters during my earlier years in the area seemed colder to me, as I recall more frequent single digit mornings (and one or two day times that cold!) and an occasional below zero. It hardly goes below 10 or 15 degrees anymore.

It all depends on what location you want to use. One of the official NWS stations like DCA or IAD. Or a personal weather station in town.
Snow is very rare in NOVA especially from Eastern Loudoun east. Last year Dec 5 was our first snow here and well the rest was history. Though today they did have snow reported in the higher elevations in Western Md and WV down to the Smoky Mtns Cant wait for it
