The Split Foyers in the Woodbridge area are configured with the kitchen downstairs, a dining room, a den, full bath and utility room. Upstairs are 3bdrms, a full bath and a living room area.

The one you describe reminds me of a bi-level in the Woodbridge area.

I live in a NoVA bi-level as well and I have toured others in my area (Mantua, FFX). Many have opened up the kitchen to both the LR and DR, so it's an open floor plan. I don't like that idea myself since I like a formal dining room. Instead, I plan on opening only the top half of the wall between the kitchen and the LR. That will give me more cabinet space in the kitchen (below that half wall) and still allow me to talk to guests.

Noise is a problem in our house upstairs so I'm looking into a French door into the hallway to the bedrooms and solid-core doors to each bedroom (3 upstairs).

The entrance is the biggest question. If money were no object, I would make a walk-up to the second story through the current office. That would become the new foyer and open into the LR. Walk-up entrances are very common in high-end townhomes in the area.
