I have a real estate tax dispute with Fairfax County regarding my home and they are trying to back bill me for 4 years after approving my tax relief exemption for each of those years. I have an atty. now who is of no help at all and my bill with him just keeps adding up . Does anybody know a lawyer who is aggressive and will help me get this issue resolved and/or sue the County Tax Admin office. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

If you have paperwork for approving your tax relief, on Fairfax County letterhead, I don't know why they just wouldn't say, "Oops, my bad!" (granted it might have to be shown to a court.)

Now if you didn't save that paperwork and they've conveniently lost the records, it might get harder.

How is your lawyer being unhelpful?

Have you spoken to someone AND written a letter? Not to compare to the house tax, but FFX Co kept screwing with me about personal property tax on my vehicle after I had moved out to Loudoun Co. I had to call and write several times before getting it remedied.

And yes, all of your documentation will be needed.

This is what your supervisor is for. Call him or her and ask for the person who handles problems with the County real estate people.

You shouldnt have to pay a lawyer.

Yep, I've got all the paperwork from the county, they just refuse to admit they messed up. I've written several letters with supporting documentation and gone to the Gov't Center in person, as has my lawyer. I will call Micheal Frey and get an appt. That's a great idea. I never I thought I'd hear myself say this, but if it Freys office can't help me, I need need a shark! So if there are any recommendations out there, I'd appreciate it.

Another thought is to try the 'Call For Action' route via WTOP or some other Consumer Affairs reporter:

Call For Action - wtop.com

It seems that people who are consumer advocates can cut through the red tape (and know whom to contact) better than the rest of us. Good luck!
