Welcome, fellow-Philadelphian! I'm from Newtown Square. I love Narberth - great town. Not too many of those kinds of places around here, but I think you might really like Bethesda, MD. It's a bit bigger than Narberth and not as quaint as Alexandria but has a great downtown - lots of restaurants, a big Barnes & Noble, a library, parks, a theatre, a bike trail that takes you to Georgetown and the red line Metro which will take you to Metro Center. The drawback is that is it very expensive to live in the downtown, walkable area (not sure if it's more or less expensive than Old Town, though).

Just thought I'd throw that out there as an option - not trying to steer you away from Alexandria.

I live in Old Town and use Verizon DSL for internet. We actually have the lower speed (less expensive) option. Generally, it has met our needs. Occasionally, we have issues where the connection cuts out temporarily. Most of our neighbors get their internet through Comcast.

We live north of King Street close to City Hall/Market Square. It has really been ideal as far as being able to walk places -- farmers market, three grocery stores, two drug stores, the library, lots of other stores/restaurants plus Little Theatre of Alexandria and Old Town Theatre (movies) nearby. Transit options to the Metro are great -- living within a couple blocks of both King Street and Washington Street (bonus if between Washington and N. Fairfax) will give you the best bus options to the Metro. Walking isn't too bad either -- 25-30 minutes to King Street and about 20 minutes to Braddock. We use the bus most days and walk on the weekend (or in the morning on nice fall or spring days). For example, here's a new listing that's actually at the low end of the range you list -- AX7517219 on FranklyMLS.com 342 PITT ST N, ALEXANDRIA VA for $810,000 in OLD TOWN Home For Sale.

Things may have changed but our next door neighbor wanted to go w/Verizon DSL (that's what we have) from her Comcast - and can't - it's "full" - no more available in the City.
