This week the Village of Waterford was designated a Preserve America Community. There are only 14 US communities in the country that received this honor.

Towns are honored for their cultural and natural heritage resources, as well as their efforts to share the benefits of their historic preservation with residents and tourists.

Towns that receive the designation can apply for preservation grants. They also get a road sign' authorization to use the Preserve America logo, listing in a directory, and (perhaps most important) inclusion in national and regional press releases and information at state tourism offices and visitors bureaus.

Preserve America Communities are also featured in National Register Travel Itineraries and in “Teaching with Historic Places” curricular material created by the National Park Service.

So congrats to Waterford!

Here's a photo tour of Waterford. It's one of my favorite little villages, so congratulations to them on this auspicious award.

I just hope it doesn't mean they'll start attracting a lot of tourists. I don't want it to become another Williamsburg. I rather like having it as our little secret.
