I have some relatives who, health permitting, would love to come to see the cherry blossoms. However, walking can be a problem, and restrooms need to be accessible. Can anyone offer some suggestions of things we could do (other than simply driving by the tidal basin) where they will see the beautiful trees but won't be uncomfortable? Thanks for any ideas.

You can see the cherrry blossoms from the Virginia side of the Potomac. There is a small park accesible from GW parkway which contains the Navy Memorial. It has a very tiny parking lot but it really is a neat spot. There aren't any restrooms there. I think there are restrooms further up at the next scenic/park stop at Roosevelt Island.

Consider taking a cab directly there or near the Washington Monument. There is a strand of Cherry Trees near the there before you cross over to the basin. That is usually where they set up the restrooms for the event. I hope you and your family have a wonderful time!

I was hesitant to make a suggestion, since I haven't actually had the experience of taking an elderly person to the cherry blossoms. However, FWIW, I think a good place to go would be to park near the FDR Memorial.

You get a nice view of the monuments from there, and there's more open space and places to sit down due to the FDR Memorial. There are cherry trees planted up into the memorial as well as along the tidal basin there. Also, FDR has an indoor area in case the weather becomes a problem and FDR's restrooms are really nice. They're probably the nicest restrooms in the monument area.

Also, I'd go early in the morning, if possible.

Let us know what you end up doing, and also what you would have done differently after having tried it. This is a good question that I'm sure will come up again, so it would be good to hear how it turned out.

How about Hains Point. Trees but not the tidal basin.

Or -there is a pretty large handicap parking lot near the Jefferson Memorial.

How about Kensington, MD? I understand the neighborhood cherry tree groves are spectacular.
