Hi,
My parents will be visiting me (from abroad) in May. I would like to show them around DC (the Mall area, tidal basin etc) but they are old (65+) are cannot walk around too much. Can you give me a suggestion as to where I can park that will be walkable to these places? I will be doing the DC trip on the weekend not on a weekday. Also, if you have suggestions for some interesting places in the East Coast that I can take them, please share.

I suggest taking one of those trolley tours or duck tours around DC if they cannot walk too much. I think there's a coupon in the entertainment book. When my husband's cousin from Germany came a few years ago, he took her on it, and they had a great time.

I know others will have more (and better! ) information, but here's one suggestion: On Saturdays and Sundays, you can park for free from 9 am to 1 pm on Constitution and Independence Avenues in front of the museums. Be sure to check the schedule of any special events going on near the malls on weekends (marathons, protests, etc.). Hope they have a wonderful visit with you and DC!

(Not sure if the times I listed are exactly what the signs state. It's either 9 am or 9:30 am.)

There is limited public parking around the tidal basin and around the national mall and it fills up quickly on the weekend. If you plan to do this, go very early and perhaps you might find a spot. There are public metered spots surrounding the National Mall. You have a better chance of finding parking between the National Indian Museum and the Voice of America building. There is alot of parking on the diagonal side streets.

I highly recommend that you park near Union Station or one of the parking garages downtown and catch a cab to the national mall or tidal basin. You could also take metro and just ride to Smithsonian Station and start your trip from there.

I hope you and your parents have a wonderful time in DC.
