It would be much easier to walk from the VRE to the metro stop at Crystal City and then take the metro to the Airport. There is a path, the Mount Vernon Trail. To get a good idea go to Google maps, select DCA and zoom in, the VRE stop is over near the Crystal Water Park, you can see the rail road tracks and the trail. Another option with less walking is get off at Kings Street VRE stop and walk over to the Kings Street metro and go up to the Airport stop.

No, you can't because it's not really walkable. There are train tracks that separate Crystal City and the airport. It can be done if you exit the Metro, walk to the south end of Crystal City, go up the ramp, cross route one and tracks on the overpass, and then back down into the airport. VERY long walk.

Thanks, guys, I always wondered about this too. Also, if I'm thinking of the same ramp, pedestrians are discourage due to narrow or no sidewalks--also tough if you're carrying or pulling a bag.

This is wrong, sorry.

The VRE station is right next to the Crystal City Water Park (a park with water, not a water slide entertainment park!). There is a bike path from this park that connects to the Mt Vernon bike path that roughly parallels the river and goes by the airport. Bike commuters use this all the time (myself included). It goes underneath both the train tracks and the GW Parkway.

The walk from the Crystal City VRE to National Airport is safe (as long as you watch out for cyclists), but it's surprisingly longer than you'd first think. You see the airport long before you get to the paths that actually connect to the airport.

Edit: If you're pulling luggage, I'd advise using Metro as others here said. Exiting VRE at King St Metro and transferring to Metrorail would involve the least walking.

Yes, it is walkable like Robboboboo wrote above. I've ridden my bike on this connector trail to the Mt. Vernon Bike Path. I would take this trail during the day but I wouldn't walk it/ride it at night. And yes, you need to be careful/aware of bikers going by.

[King Street VRE-to-Metro would save a bunch of that.]

Heh... there's even a bike rack (or several) at the airport. Maybe it's used mostly by employees, but what a carefree existence to contemplate: taking your bike to the airport wearing a backpack containing just the essentials, and then jetting off to somewhere very far from NoVA...
