My husband and I are taking jobs in the Alexandria/Arlington area and are looking for a place to live. I'd like to keep my commute to an hour or less, and live in an area with a good school system. What cities/towns would be good options?

Right now we live in Southern MD, but the commute is terrible.

You'll have to give a lot more info. What's your price range? What type of housing do you want to find? Do you want to take public transit, or would you rather drive?

We're looking for a townhouse around $300K. My husband would prefer to drive, but I am open to taking public transportation.

I don't think you'll find a townhouse walking distance to a metro for $300K but perhaps a townhouse that's on a good bus route to a metro station. I used to live in Oakton and would definitely recommended it for families. There are buses that go to the Vienna metro.

I agree that Oakton's very nice, but I don't think you'll find a $300k townhouse there.

Maybe Springfield/Burke? Hopefully the person going to Arlington can flex their hours and go in early or late to mitigate 395. The Alexandria commute should be relatively painless (as far as NoVA commutes go, at least)

You'll be able to get a condo in a decent school system (Falls Church City, maybe parts of North Arlington that go to Yorktown or Washington-Lee) that is 2 bedroom in your price range.

If "good school system" is a big deal, I'd avoid Wakefield (south Arlington) and TC Williams (Alexandria City.)

I've seen townhouses in Oakton for $300K granted they were older and smaller but they were selling for $300K nonetheless.

While I think Oakton is more family oriented I have to defend my home turf. There's nothing wrong with south Arlington its just not as polished as the north side of things. Arlington is just so expensive for a family. Unfortunately $300K isn't a lot for a townhouse in this area. So family on that "tight" of a budget has to look at THEIR options. North Arlington just isn't a realistic option for $300K. Falls Church on the other hand I think $300K is more reasonable but the closer one gets to a metro station the less realistic that $300K becomes.
