I would like to move into the area. I am school counselor with 4 years of experience working in PA. I have applied to Prince William, Loudoun, Fairfax, and Alexandria City. Any advice for finding a position. I have there are several openings in Prince William. I completed the application process and it was reviewed. Now do I wait for HR to contact me, or should I contact the individual schools telling them that I'm interested?

I would say contact individual schools, although it will be hard to know right now which schools have openings for counselors. In Fairfax, the transfers just ended at the end of May so right now it's a dominoe effect of who's moving, what's open, etc. I think for FCPS, the list will come out again in July but it doesn't hurt to contact.

I thought about contacting individual prinicpals, but I wasn't sure if that was being too much. I know some prinicpals don't like it.

PWC HR is very disorganized. They lose faxes, etc.. You will have to hand feed them every detail/document. Save yourself a lot of trouble, and just avoid.

I did my student teaching at a FFX County middle school (which, unfortunately, has had zero movement in the subject I teach so they can't hire me ) The principal there suggested I contact all the principals by email at the schools I'm interested in. She said they were told today they can start hiring, so I'd go for it.

Thanks. I will send out the emails.

In case you missed it, I did send you a DM with more specifics to FCPS, DM back if you like. I know right now FCPS is currently making sure all destaff people are placed. Once that's done, then they'll know what is or isn't open.

A few questions about getting a teaching job in FCPS. The online application includes an online "interview" (really a survey of your thoughts on teaching), and they also asks whether you have student taught in FCPS. I have heard that student teachers in FCPS don't have to go to the job fair. Is that because the principal submits and evaluation? How much weight does the student teaching principal's recommendation carry? Also, is there a way to re-do the online "interview" because mine was done a few years ago.

It is my understanding that jobs are not open to outside people until July 1. Maybe the principal described above was talking about the college fair recruiting? It is frustrating to me that people moving into the county don't have the "early in" as do students from particular colleges.

There really isn't any need for an early in - a lot of principals like to shop around and prefer to hire late, after they've seen all the "merchandise." In my school, most of the hiring was done more or less last minute. Nothing is preventing you from sending emails and resumes to principals early.
