Anyone have some recommendations for great, cost-effective homeowners insurance providers? They can't all be good, so who are some favorites?

I believe Consumers' Checkbook rated Amica and Erie as tops. But they charge a lot more. I think I got an estimate of maybe $800/year for Amica and ended up paying $500/year for Travelers. If you don't file a claim, the money is worth it. It's when you do that the extra money supposedly gets you better service.

Isn't that the irony of insurance in general? It seems that if you use it you end up paying more afterward. Yet we're required to carry it. A lose-lose situation. Anyway... of the choices you provided, sounds like Travelers (associated with Geico) is a possibility.

If you're military related, USAA is great! We've been with them for over 10 yrs. Wonderful customer service and big discounts for combining insurance. If you aren't military/retired, you can sign up if a relative is a member.

Try Geico.com. They have Homeowners insurance. If you combine with Auto you can save more money..

Progressive has been pretty cheap for us so far. I've never made a claim though so can't say how good or bad they are at handling claims.

I just used the same company as my auto insurance (I have state farm). More savings this way.
