I am planning on enroling my 5-yr old in a Soccer League. I am considering either Vienna Youth Soccer or Fairfax Police Youth Club. I am not sure if my residency in Oakton should impact my decision, but I would love to hear your suggestions, preferences or experiences with these two soccer clubs.

If there are other soccer clubs that I should be considering, do let me know. I am not looking for a summer camp, but for something on a long-term basis.

Thanks,
K

We just moved to Oakton and my neighbor was saying they do Chantilly Youth Association for soccer.

Thanks. I would think that the Chantilly soccer fields would be farther away from Oakton than soccer fields in Vienna or Fairfax, but I will defintely look into CYA as well. Thanks once again.

My daughter is in VYS, and it is very well-run. The fields can be pretty spread out. One of the farthest from Oakton might be Colvin Run Elem. My daughter's team practiced at Westbriar which is a bit of a hike during rush hour. Our games were at Marshall Road. Other games were at Thoreau and Wolftrap Elem. to give you an idea of where they are. We had kids on our team from Fairfax, so I don't think you need to be a resident of Vienna.

Michgc, did you kids ever do the Junior Academy through VYS? We can't do fall soccer because of some other Saturday commitments but the Sunday clinics sound good for my son who has never done a team sport.

I looked into the playing fields for VYS and CYA for soccer, and Oakton is centrally located with fields in either clubs being (average) between 6 - 9 miles. Both the clubs seem well-run, so the decision might come down to "Do I want to drive on Hwy 50 (Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy) West or Rt 123 (Maple Ave/Chain Bridge Rd) North on Saturday mornings?" Any suggestions?

The games on Saturday mornings are fine. It's the practices after school between 4 PM and 6 PM that can be a bear, depending on where you practice. My friend lives off Lawyers and had practice at Colvin Run Elem., which actually wasn't too bad because she avoided 123. We live near Whole Foods and had practice at Westbriar at 6 PM, which was sometimes a pain. I know after you are assigned a team you can request a change to a new team if practice doesn't fit your time/date. I suppose if it's not convenient distance-wise you can ask for a switch, too.

Thanks, michgc. So VYS comes out ahead since I'll be driving against the traffic on 123 North (weekday evenings) and I have experienced how terrible 50 West gets during the evening rush hours.
