Yes, this is it, they have to make their quota of school days but since there's no more work to be done they just put in the minimum. The last day is just a fun day, no point in prolonging it any more than they need to. Plus I think the teachers then do some kind of celebration, lunch out together or something.

As an elementary teacher, as well, I am thrilled that they go for two and a half hours instead of the whole day on the last day of school. Nobody wants to be there and, of course, there are a required number of days....so I say it's a blessing!

Yeah, but part of that is because grades are due almost two weeks before the last day of school.

So why bother with the last two and a half hours?

I agree, that is totally crazy. I think school should be over as soon as standardized testing is over , personally. However, having to have grades in two weeks before school is out and then try. I guess it varies (from state to state? or is it a nationwide thing? 180 days) as to how many days students must go? I assume that 2 1/2 hours counts as one of those days. A lot of things in education don't make sense, but then again, they don't ask us do they? Maybe they should, lol!

Our grades are due on the last day of school so we have until the end of the day to get them in. After the buses pull out, we attend a lunch and recognize all the teachers retiring or moving on to other schools.

Teacher party? Yeah, between cleaning up your room, turning in your grades and having 42 different people sign off on your 50 item check-out sheet it's a ton of fun. Oh there is a lunch provided which is spent listening to the Principal tell you how his bonus came from your work this year and how he expects it to continue next year because his kid is starting college.

The reason is as stated, classes are over and the last day gets the minimum number of days in. Prince George's County in MD has a full day. The parents don't want their kids at home.

No teacher party here either. The kids left at 10:50. I took my son home around 11:30, heated up some lunch, then went back to school to clean, pack, cover shelves, and turn in stuff. I left at 4:10 yesterday and went back in this morning to check out. At least I didn't have a staff meeting.

I guess that's true in some of AL, but I lived in Sheffield, AL for the past four years and 1) they have early dismissal on the last day, and 2) the teachers discourage the kids from coming the last day. They definitely don't have parties or fun time tho'. The kids that do come do all of the end of the year classroom clean up.

Mine all come because that is the day we hand out their progress reports.

In my system the kids come the last day to raise hell and try to get suspended for the first couple weeks of the new school year in august.
