I'm starting to get worried reading a lot of the posts about the people in the area being stand-offish and sometimes unfriendly. We are moving to the area from Florida, our current area has been tough to meet people but I have managed ok through mostly wives of my husbands coworkers. I work full time at home so that doesn't help. We have two young children not yet in elementary school...we will be living in Leesburg or Ashburn...so my question is...how do you make friends in NoVa??

Neighbors, church, toastmasters, and more recently meet up groups are where I've met most of my friends (outside of co-workers).

Mostly through work, I have been here 2 years I work in retal management so I have been at several locations meeting a few frends here and there I have met some really awesome friends here. Yes the people can be stand offish but I have to admit it kind of rubs off on you. I have always been a very nice person, talk to everyone but after 2 years here you sort of get into the Nova groove. I also feel like it depends a lot on the neighborhood you live in, in my frist complex the people were down right rude and didnt even say hi to you in the hallways, but my current place (8 miles away) is much different and people are A LOT friendlier. I thnk it helps when you live in a neighborhood that hosts neighborhood partys! Just be yourself and you will meet people but trust me you will probably have some lonely nights, well maybe not too many since your married, being single can get old sometimes though. Bottom line is you can meet some really nice people in Nova.. dont worry they are here!!!!!

Through work or church. We joined a couples' small group early on and it's been wonderful.

Still trying to figure this one out. We've been here 4 years now and it's been very challenging. We're a married couple (no kids) in our early to mid 30's and everyone we meet already seems to have their established group of friends.

Making friends has been very easy. Work, neighbors, community swim and tennis club...we're a family of 3.
I think it varies a lot depending on where you are.

Join a Mom's Club. That seems to help a lot. It might be harder since you work full-time, but some groups have more working moms than others and do weekend and evening activities. I met lots of moms and made many friends from my local Vienna Moms Group that I joined when my oldest was 2 months old. We are still friends today - 9 1/2 years later.

I don't know anyone here except my SO (and some acquaintances from work, but they don't really count). I met him online (not on a dating site.. on a forum much nerdier even than C-D ) before I moved here.
