I've had to drive from the Charlotte metro and go I-85 to I-95 to reach the D.C. area. Pretty simple drive. When I get on I-95 at Petersburg and go through Richmond, it's really not that bad. Then when I hit Fredericksburg, WHAM! And then when I return home, it clears up after Fredericksburg. Why is that spot the cut off?

Was this a serious question? I would think the answer was extremely obvious. Not trying to be a smart *** but this is NOV*** You can't put this many cars on the road at the same time and expect smooth sailin***

I do the same drive from Chapel Hill. Simply put, Fredericksburg is the outer reaches of the DC Metropolitan Area. People commute there into DC. So that's pretty much where the traffic gets bad. Once you are south of Fredericksburg, you are hitting the Richmond Metropolitan area which has much less traffic.

The reason why Fredericksburg is such a bottleneck is because 95 is the main route to cross the Rappahannock River. So in addition to all the interstate traffic you have drivers getting on 95 just to make local trips.

isn't that also where vehicles from the northern neck hit I95?

Fredericksburg is where all the traffic starts - all the way up to D.C. - thats just the way it is

Fredericksburg (the entire Stafford/Spotsylvania/Fredericksburg area) has a HUGE population...and most of the residents commute to NoVa....figure about 75,000 folks work north of here....and there really is no other convenient way to get north.....you could take 301, but that's horrible, too!

What we need is another route north!

I noticed this yesterday too, I was driving back from Charleston, SC and traffic was smooth until I reached Fredericksburg. Then it slowed down considerably, stop-and-go actually, which was surprising to me seeing how I didn't expect traffic so late on Sunday...it was around 7:00 pm. After a few very painful miles, traffic cleared up and it was a smooth ride the rest of the way to Sterling (which includes some areas that are normally bad, such as Springfield, 495, 7).

I rather use 301 than to use I-95 while traveling between Richmond and DC. With 301, you'll at least bypass Fredericksburg. You won't deal with traffic until you get into Waldorf and it's not nearly as bad as I-95.
