My husband and I would like to plan a weekend trip, within 2-3 hours' drive of here. We'd like to find a resort on a lake. I've been trying to research this, but haven't come up with much. We love the beach and have been to the beach once this summer, but would like to try a different type of weekend getaway on a lake. Any suggestions? This would be for a romantic type of trip.

Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. Or Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.

Smith Mountain is gorgeous but more than 2-3 hours, more like 4-5. Lake Anna is just outside Richmond.

If it's romantic, how about my favorite, The Tides Inn in Irvington? It's not a lake but it's on the Rappahannock River. Beautiful place, wonderful food. Full resort with golf, swimming, tennis, bikes to tour (tidewater so it's nice and flat). It is a bit expensive but worth every penny. Again, though, more like 3 to 4 hours.

Have a safe trip.

Don't know which ones have lakes, but how about the Penssylvania ski resorts? They probably have some good summertime packages.

2nd Deep Creek in MD. It's a year round resort, has skiing in he winter. They have all sorts of rentals from Huge houses to condos. Nice hiking trails one goes to a small waterfall etc, picnic grounds and a beach swimming area.
Beautiful area! I realy love it there in fall.

Rocky Gap Resort is about 2 hours northwest of DC. Beautiful surroundings.

You might also try Massanutten, which is a golf/ski resort in Harrisonburg, VA.

Hmm.. I had done a whole post and it's not showing

Anyway, Aug. of last yr. we took a trip to Lynchburg of all places (3 day trip also) and enjoyed it! Got a great deal at the hotel (there were several promotions) - we walked to a place where you could sit out outside, have drinks, etc. the first night (Fri.) - Sat. there was a Farmer's Market that we also walked to and then checked out the rest of the walkable places (granted, there isn't a ton from downtown but there were some) - hotel has a pool on the roof so we ordered in pizza and relaxed by the pool that night. Sun. went to Bedford D-Day Memorial (highly recommend). All in all, a very relaxing, enjoyable trip.

Also: Pittsburgh, Seven Springs/Ligonier area, Lancaster, etc. are certainly all interesting and drivable. In the fall, I'd recommend Cooper's Rock (found it one late Oct. when returning from Pgh. and it's beautiful).
