We have just returned from a trip to the Adirondacks in NY and have fell in love with kayaking, hiking and fly fishing. We are unfamiliar with where to go outside the area to do these activities. Any day trips that people have done and love?

Shenandoah river, either the North or South forks, are good areas. You'll need to drive to Luray or Edinburg. Google Murray's Fly Shop. Murray is really nice and will help you get started in the area.

Closer in, you can drive to Beverly Mill just off I-66. Park at the old mill. There's a stream behind the mill that is good if the water is up.

In Gainesville, there's Broad Run Stream. Drive to Sudley Manor Road and park at the Safeway. Walk about 1/2 mile to the bridge on Sudley Manor that crosses Broad Run. You can go upstream or downstream from there. Good smallmouth bass and bluegill. I fished it yesterday and lost count on how many we caught.

My favorite is Riverbend, especially at this time of year when grasses can become a problem in some of the other rivers. search for a thread called Kayaking 2010--we had a whole list of great places in that thread as I recall.

My wife and I kayak on the Occoquan Reservoir, putting in at Fountainhead. Kayaks are available to rent, and we did that before buying our kayaks. We really like it there since there's a limit on the size of boat motors - max. of 10 horsepower - and no jet skies. Makes for some easy paddling, and that's just the way we like it.

There are also trails at Fountainhead for hiking and mountain biking.

Wow, thank you so much for the pictures. Can't wait to go, maybe next weekend if the temp would just drop into the 80s.

For flyfishing info, the No VA Chapter of TU has a great website. nvatu.org

The chapter sponsors a great trip to the Deep Creek Lake are in MD in October for trout fishing. Lots of streams in the area.

By the way, yesterday we were hiking in Claude Moore Park and saw some sort of fishing class for kids at the ponds behind the Lanesville Historic Village. If you're looking for a fishing class for kids, that looked like a fun one.
