How bad would it be to live in Falls Church (just inside the beltway near Rt. 50) and commute to Hyattsville? I've Google-mapped it and none of the driving options look that great. I have never actually been to Hyattsville, so I am just going by the map. Opinions?

Not too bad for this area, I guess. My guess would be around 45 minutes. Once you get pass Tysons, it won't be that bad.

It will be awful. I can't think if a route that won't get jammed up often. Tyson's corner isn't the only place along the Beltway that gets congested. 50 to 395 to 295 north is okay for half of it because half of it will be a reverse commute. Traffic will be congested in the Hyattsville area as well. Metro would be a better choice for that commute. If you can tolerate heavy traffic you might be okay. After all, I did once live in Beltsville and commute to Burke and I survived it.

Well, I live near Tysons Corner and it usually take me about 35 minute to get to College park. I assume that you would use the beltway. Usually from Tysons Corner up along the beltway, it's not bad in the morning (it is a bit worse in the evning), I don't know how long it would take you to get from your place to Tysons in the morning though.

Hyattsville can be defined as a big area, you have to be specific as to what part you are talking about. There are some places like Landover, Landover Hills, and Chillum for example that are called Hyattsville because they have a postal zip code labeled to be in Hyattsville. Depending on what you say there may be some different options.

Thanks for all the replies!
The area I am thinking of commuting to is near the intersection of Chillum Rd. and 19th Street, if that helps to narrow it down a bit. I don't know whether it would be better to take the beltway or try and figure out which surface roads would get me there...

On your best days it would be merely tiring/draining, on your worst it would be unbearable.

The beltway unfortunately isn't going to help you too much. That part of Hyattsville is a long way from 495. I would honestly drive into the city and from there, get off on 395 North (3rd Street Tunnel), take the D Street NW exit, turn right on E Street, turn left on North Capitol Street, ride it all the way down to Michigan Avenue, make a left on 13th Street NE (turns to Sargent Road), and then turn on Chillum Road. Going away from the city on North Capitol Street will help you out a lot in the mornings and taking Michigan Avenue to NE would alleviate a lot of traffic for you because that particular part of DC isn't as congested.

This actually isn't a bad idea. Only problem is getting into DC. Can you pick up a slug or neighbor to ride with you on 66? Then it's an easy shot into DC, ending up on Constitution. Then you could just turn left up 16th all the way till it becomes Georgia Ave. And from there, not far at all to H'ville.

50 to 395 won't be too bad. Why bother with 66. If he really wants to end up on Constitution Ave (not recommended - also under construction now) then 50 will take him right there. Better off on the 395 route given by the other poster above. There will be traffic, but it's only for a few miles.
