I am looking for an HVAC company to maintain the heating and cooling system in my new house in western Fairfax.

From a search of this site and others, two companies seem very good:

Residential Systems (Northern Virginia Heating & Cooling - RESIDENTIAL SYSTEMS INC.) in Chantilly and Bowman (Plumbing Services, Heating Repair | Sterling, VA) in Sterling.

Does any one have experience with one of these companies? Thanks.

Bishop Equipment Company in Fairfax (Air Conditioning & Heating Contractors - Fairfax, VA - Bishop Equipment Co. Inc.) is very good. They've been around forever.

Thanks and keep'em coming, but what about Residential Systems or Bowman?

LOVE Residential Systems. I've had my fair share of bad experiences with HVAC companies and price gouging. I have always found RSI to be professional and informative. They never tried to "sell" me and even fixed a small problem for me that another company said was a bad coil ($2000 fix). Turns out, RSI discovered a small leak and it only cost $400 to fix.

Both times they sent out an experienced installer that was extremely friendly.

Thank you for the recommendation.

ILD--http://www.epatest.com/ take the preventative maintenance course (PM). It's good and it's free and it's online. Will save you thousands. Don't be another NoVan victimized by lack of savvy on mechanical issues with the house. Even if you don't want to pick up a screwdriver--it will give you a much better idea of the time and costs involved indifferent repairs, as well as the symptoms.

How about Michael & Son, by the way? They seem to have worked on the HVAC at my house before I bought it.

I have a call to RSI (voicemail/e-mail), but couldn't speak to a live human being.

Michael and Son are way overpriced, I would avoid them.

I tried Wooden's Sudden Service and had great results. I recommended them to a coworker and she had a great experience with them as well. Not sure if they service your area...

We've had electrical, plumbing and HVAC services from them. Responsible, on-time, an indignation over the crappy work done by our builder's subs. We've used them for 10 years.
