Does anybody know the story behind the Middleburg Christmas parade? What is the significance of the red coats? Did the British red coats ride through Middleburg during the revolutionary war?

The red coats pre-date the revolutionary war. It might be to protect riders from being accidentally shot by hunters, or maybe it was just an easy vibrant color to dye material back in those days. Fox hunting was once a major past time in Virginia, and the parade celebrates that bit of our heritage.

This may be a stretch but a style of English riding coat was called a "redingote", a French corruption. Perhaps the concept of a red riding coat sprang from that.
