I was comparing property taxes paid on zillow, and it looks like Fairfax county property taxes indeed went down as home prices adjusted downwards.

In some other states, I noticed that property taxes stayed the same, or even went up even when assessed values adjusted downwards.

Have property tax rates stayed the same in Fairfax county in the last several years? If I own a 400 K property, I should expect to pay less than 4000 in annual property taxes?

Was there anything spefcific that Fairfax county cut to make up for the revenue loss?

(Background: The area I am looking at is about 10 miles from the 495 beltway. I am intending to move there from the Atlanta metro in the next few months.)

Thanks!

Property tax is calculated as a percentage of the assessed value of the property (land + dwelling). What you can expect to pay depends on what the county assesses the value at, not what you paid for it.

You have a base tax rate of $1.07/$100 of assessed value. Add to that any surcharges like leaf/garbage collection if you have it.

Rates the last few years have risen and fallen, but for me, the amount of tax owed has always increased, since the real estate assessments have adjusted as well.

In 4/2008, in a thread that I started: https://www.city-data.com/forum/north...sing-nova.html I got the following information for Fairfax county:

"Their rate this year remains at $8.90 per thousand of assessed value."

So has the rate gone up since then?

How is the real estate tax calculated?
The base real estate tax rate is $1.07 per $100 of assessed value. To compute the real estate tax on a property assessed at $400,000, divide the assessed value by 100 and multiply by the tax rate:

($400,000 ÷ 100) x $1.07 = $4,280
