An interesting study. I'd like to see NOVA vs. ROVA.

... states where people are least likely to curse – were Massachusetts (2nd place), Arizona (3rd place), Texas (4th place), Virginia (5th place).

As a native of Massachusetts, I find this study highly suspect. Cursing is not only an accepted part of the local lexicon, it's encouraged. Hell, it's punctuation.

Be careful what you ask for. I know that in Virginia Beach and my hometown of Hampton, there are anti-cursing laws that are actively enforced. That may tip the cursing scale to NoVA's advantage.

How in the world did they come up with this? And who actually cared enough to spend time/money on figuring this out?

Being from New England, I also am highly dubious about MA being #2 on the list.

I lived in OH at one time and my experience matched the survey results on both cursing and lack of courtesy! I got a kick out of the article. Hey, maybe that's why I don't find most people as cold or rude here as some other people do. Maybe it depends on where you have moved from.

Did you guys see that MD residents ranked as more likely to swear than did VA residents?

Jillybean, it apparently focused on swearing to customer service people so my guess is the companies cared enough to pay for it:

"The Institute, Marchex’s data and research team, examined more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. The calls were placed by consumers to businesses across 30 industries, including cable and satellite companies, auto dealerships, pest control centers and more."

Maybe alot of the curse words up in MA just don't get recognized because of their accents. I too have no facken clue how they're ranked so low.

LOL seems like just yesterday that Herndon was voted America's Most Obscene City. Remember this?

Marchex’s data and research team, examined more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months. The calls were placed by consumers to businesses across 30 industries, including cable and satellite companies, auto dealerships, pest control centers and more.

The Institute scanned for curse words from A to F to S. Analysts then linked the frequency of those words with all 50 states.

Hey, on the bright side MA also ranked #2 on the LEAST curteous state list...
