Sometimes reading though threads on this forum, I might get stumped, and having to google your acronym. It's sort of strange trying to disect your sentences . So with respect to the non-military people here please post your most used acronyms.

My favorites are :FWIW, "my DH" and v/r

FWIW=For what it's worth

DH=husband. The D can stand for dear, damn, or any number of adjectives in between. DW=wife, DS=son, DD=daughter.

YMMV=Your mileage may vary

IMO=In my opinion. Also, IMHO=In my honest opinion. Not sure if that implies that the first one is a dishonest opinion.

I thought IMHO meant "in my humble opinion", which insinuates a better connotation.....

Interesting.

I hate all of these. Most of them are gratuitous and...I believe the adjective is "twee." You know--self-consciously cute. For god's sake, if someone is your family member, we can all assume they are dear to you. Is it really worth the typing time saved to write "DH" instead of "husband"? Or "spouse"? DD is a bra size, not your daughter's name.

In fact, from now on, I propose we all interpret the "D" in any of these as "damn."

"YMMV" is also annoying. It's completely without value or function. It is obvious that one person's experience may not predict that of others; there is no need to point this out. It's one of those things people think is clever and cute but is just annoying. Like "TMI"--which was clever for about 10 seconds in 1994.

IMHO: Look, everyone knows it's just your opinion. Are you really that humble?

IIUC: Just say "I believe" or "I think."

I'll confess I use "BTW," but everyone knows that one, and it does save some time if I'm hurrying to bust out a reply. Perhaps I should give it up, though.

At my place of slavery, (which I am the bottom of the food chain), we have this "Really?...Really?" thing going on/

I'm not sure about v/r. In my work it means virtual reality, but it might mean something very different here.

I try to avoid the acronyms but I do think YMMV can be good to add on those occasions when you're relating an experience you had but want to make it clear that other people shouldn't assume they'll have the same experience. As in: I usually can drive to Tysons Mall from Sterling in 15 minutes, but YMMV.

Katyusha started a listed of local acronyms, too. (IAD=Dulles Airport, DTC=Dulles Town Center, etc.) I wish I could find it. That would be a good thing to bump for newcomers.

Ah, yes. VR. "Very Respectfully." Only at DoD do we practice such belabored e-obsequiousness. I also had to learn WILCO--"Will comply." (Whatever happened to reliable old "OK" or "Will do"?)

See, I would assume that my lead foot and crazy lane-changing would cut that time in half. ;-)

I cut slack when it's someone on the forum who's regularly helpful and informative. So Caladium, I only do a partial eye roll when I see your YMMV!
