My husband and I are planning to move to the NOVA area. I'm looking for help in terms of commute, schools and general living areas.

Details:
Husband will work in Front Royal and I will work in DC (Gallery Place metro). We are trying to find the best location that will give him a driving commute of no more than 1 hr...and me 30-45 mins (I can drive, metro, VRE, etc).

We have 3 children in Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 8th grade. The oldest is an excellent student so we are hoping to get him into a GREAT public/charter high school.

Which areas/county/city would you suggest given the work locations and commute considerations? Which schools? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is your housing budget? If you're looking for a SFH under $400k, then I'd advise you to understand that your wants may not fit your budget.

Sorry not possible!

For his commute to be no more than 1 hour - you would need to live in the Oakton area. Vienna would be just over an hour. From Oakton to Gallery Place would take you more than an hour.

What about commuting on the VRE? Maybe near Burke? Does that still put us both beyond a 1 hr commute.

Something along the 66 corridor may be possible but it will definitely depend on your budget.

Burke would put you each just over an hour.

Yeah I'm thinking Centreville, Manassas, Gainesville, or Haymarket would be the ticket. I would probably suggest Gainesville or Haymarket (newer homes for the same price as Oakton or Centreville) and you could take the VRE train to work while he drives to Front Royal.

I used to live in Oakton and its a great place for families but that adds another 10 minutes or so to his commute putting it just over an hour.

In Bristow/Gainesville taking the VRE to DC would be closer to 90 minutes

Since your Dh will be working in Front Royal, I think you'd be better off living off of I 66 instead of I 95

I work in Front Royal and live in Manassas. It takes me about 50-60 minutes to drive there leaving at 5-530 AM. I am the Prince William Parkway near Wellington RD if you want to find it as a reference. He might be able to leave from further east on 66 and make it an hour. Maybe the Fair Oaks to Oakton area as someone else mentioned. For Oakton he would have to be able to right onto 66 to make that hour. The problem is with your commute. VRE in Manassas is possible.
