I have finally gotten the all clear to start running again and I would like to sign up for a Marathon or two to keep my running goals in check. Does anyone have any recommendations for ones to try to get into? I don't know if most around here have the lottery system or if you just sign up before they fill up, but any experiences that anyone can share would be great appreciated!

I would prefer Marathons, but if there are shorter races that are really worth participating in, I am all for those too. I just like timed races to satisfy my competitive side.

The two big marathons in the DC area are the National Marathon in March (which is now a Rock-n-Roll marathon, starting in 2012) and the Marine Corps Marathon in October. The National Marathon is all within the district limits, whereas the MCM course covers both the district and a lot of northern VA in Arlington.

I haven't run either yet, but have heard great things about both. Neither one is lottery entry - but the MCM registration fills up really fast. I think reg usually opens in March/April and it will be full in maybe a day. National Marathon is pretty easy to get into though.

I'd also suggest the Cherry Blossom 10 mile race - it's one of the most popular in the area and it's really excellent. Registration for this one IS lottery based, and it's open right now until I think either the 12th or 13th. The next race is 4/1/12. The course is amazing and the field is 15,000, so it's a blast.

Hope that helps.

If you are interested in running the Marine Corps Marathon, but don't get in (since as another poster mentioned, it fills up FAST!), try running the Irish Sprint. I haven't done it (yet, I plan to this year!) so I don't know the exact process--but finishers of the Irish Sprint have the opportunity to get a spot in the Marine Corps Marathon.
