We wanted to skip the part from Oak Marr Rec center this time, so we started at Miller Heights Road, at the entrance to the CCT near Lochinver. The terrain varied from relatively flat, to almost hiking. It was getting close to sunset, so we only walked for 90 minutes round trip, didnt make it quite all the way to Vale Road. There were a few folks about - a few walkers, a runner, and then, what we have not seen on the CCT before, a half dozen equestrians. The valley gets particularly dramatic as you get up towards Vale.

This is one of my favorite trails. I believe we even had a phototour of it a few years ago.

There's a small lot off of Georgetown Pike. It's right where the road takes a tight curve, so keep your eyes peeled for it.

On miller heights road, theres a little wide spot right where you will see people parked on a nice day, right by the trail head.

Shh... Don't spread the words out. This is my secret place too! Don't want it to get too crowded!

LOL I just realized we're talking about two different trails called Difficult Run Trail. Yours is in Oakton, and mine is just east of Great Fall National Park.

I think they are the same trail, which extends all the way (with some gaps) from Oakton to GFNP. Diff Run trail is now The northern half of the CCT - the southern half is the Accotink trail, which extends from FFX city all the way to near the Occoquan. Ergo running across FFX county - all the way from the Occoquan to GFNP.

next time we intend to start earlier and make it at least as far as Vale road.

At that point there is a short detour onto Vale, then the trail picks up to Lawyers Road, where I think you are then directed onto the Reston trail system. (there has been temporary rerouting due to the silver line construction on the toll road, which effects where the trail crosses the toll road, IIUC - we havent done that end of the trail yet, so I am not sure)

Ah, same trail but with gaps. Are they building connectors? Will it eventually be one long trail? That would be cool.

Here the photo tour, but it's just of the northernmost section next to Great Falls National Park.
