We live in leesburg and am new to the area. Are there any great small towns/ light displays/ christmas charm that i could drive my mid 70 year old parents and 4 and 5 year old kids to see/ walk around and come home that evening after dinner. I would love a moutainy location but realistically i think anything over the 2 to 2.5 hour mark drive (both coming and going) would be too much- in the end i am up for anything that would put us in the christmas spirit!

Ps- i am sure williamsburg would thrill my mom but at a 3 hr drive i would need a descent cheap hotel which with tight budgets i am not sure that is doable.

Thank you!!!

It isn't a small town, but Old Town Alexandria is usually decked out for the holidays. And then you could drive to Mt. Vernon and see the estate and Christmas decorations.

Here are two historic house events this weekend in Middletown, VA just south of Winchester:

Belle Grove Plantation, "Winter Wonderland Candlelight & Daylight Tours":

Hoffman Historic House Open House:

On the way back, you can stop in the historic downtown of Winchester for dinner. This year, Winchester made the tops in AARP's "2011 Best Places to Retire" list. Enjoy!

I've always thought Harpers Ferry was beautiful at Christmas time. I also love the little town of Hillsboro, and I think they do a Christmas play and a Christmas in Hillsboro homes tour, but I don't see an updated link for 2011. Here is last years
Hillsboro Community Association

Chopping down your own Christmas tree with a thermos of cocoa handy is another way to get in the mood. Plenty of places in Waterford, Middleburg and Round Hill to do that.

Lots of great things to do out in the countryside around you!

Purcellville has a trolley running on Sunday from 5:30-8pm. It drives around the town looking at the different neighborhoods w/ lights. While waiting there is hot cocoa. It sounds really neat and since we live here we may check it out.

This may not be exactly what you had in mind but at Reston Town Center they have horse drawn carriage rides on Saturdays 3-8pm through Christmas, santa clause visits/photos and the town center is decked out with tons of Christmas decor and live carolers and if you have little ones the ice rink is a cool thing too... even if you just use it as a backdrop to the Christmas scene. Also tons of awesome resturants at RTC. Enjoy the time spent with your parents!

Default Holiday Fun with the Family

National Harbor is located on the water in MD across the way from Old Town Alexandria. There are more restaurants and shops than you can count and they have it all decorated very nicely (especially nice in the late day/evening when everything is lit up). Be sure to visit the hotel there - the lobby is a winter wonderland. There is a cute and pretty inexpensive activity for the kids - check the website but they are doing gingerbread activities but make sure before you go! Also, (very expensive) but fun I hear is the ICE show there. The theme this year is Madagascar (the movie). Everything is carved out of ice.

It will take you about an hour to get there from Leesburg - not too bad!

Enjoy!
