Hi All,

I currently live in Old Town Alexandria and drive to SW DC (right off 395/1N) to get to the office. I am considering moving to Dunn Loring/Merrifield (on Gallows Rd.) because I need a bigger apartment, and can get more bang for my buck the further away from the city I go.

Question - Is anyone currently driving from Dunn Loring to DC, and if yes, what route do you take and how long does it normally take you?

Any help/insight is appreciated.

How come you would drive when Dunn Loring has a metro? Orange line goes through a significant part of SW including the region near 395?

Yer not crazy, but you will need to HOV if you plan on taking 66 or have a hybrid, inside the beltway it takes about 20 minutes from 495 to constitution ave/independence ave exit on 66

Hmm, curious as to why you didn't scold her for living in one county and working in another? Or is it just those from Loudoun who do this are the enemy?

Exactly.

My spouse drives to roughly the same area and he takes either 395 or Rt 50 to Washington Blvd to 14th St Bridge from Annandale. When he has an early morning dr's appt. in the Merrifield area, he usually opts to take 29 or 50 in towards DC. It might be worth looking at some maps and doing a test run.

You can also take Gallows -> HWY 50 -> GWP -> Memorial Bridge -> Independence Dr -> Maine Ave/M St.
The commuting time should be comparable to taking Metro.

Actually, you're the one who has to deal with it. We, the Loudoun commuters, are happily having our cake and eating it, too.

Crazy? No. Masochistic? Perhaps. Then again, some people live in freakin' Gainesville and commute to DC. Hell, when I worked in Rockville, one dude commuted in from Pennsylvania!

(We briefly considered buying a house near Dunn Loring, on Shreve Road, but opted not to based on the difficulty of the DC commute.)
