I would recommend you move closer to the Pentagon, if the job is worth it. MUCH closer.

I don't see how such a long commute would be feasible.

There is a new commuter lot located at the intersection of Balls Ford Road and 234 (behind the 7-11). I am not sure where it goes, but I am sure it is close enough.

The bus route begins at the Manassas Mall (by Sears) so you should be able to get a seat, the return trip is where you'll have to wait in line and you can stand.

Don't rule out VRE. I don't know why you don't think you would get a transit benefit? All federal employees are eligible as far as I know, unless you're a contractor? Also, there is a free shuttle that runs between Crystal City where you can catch the VRE and the Pentagon for DOD employees: http://www.cp26.army.mil/documents/Shuttle_Tri-fold.pdf. Don't torture yourself with 66 traffic/buses. VRE is extremely reliable and easy to get to in Bristow.

Regarding the federal employee transit benefit, keep in mind the monthly benefit limit is currently $130. If Congress ever gets around to passing the tax extenders bill, it will go back up to $245, but, if the last time they let the provision expire is any indication, it won't be until January 2015. $130/month doesn't go too far when commuting from anywhere outside the beltway.

If you're looking for a place that far away from the Pentagon, I'd recommend looking along the I-95 or 267 corridor. Both are much more consistent commutes on the buses and you don't have to taken them at off-hours. The HOV on I-66 is often just as jammed as the regular lanes, whereas I-95 and 267 have dedicated bus/HOV areas that are usually free-flowing.
