Inside the beltway is very liberal. Outside-not so much.

Thanks for the feedback. Having lived in the area, and having kept up on regional politics since then, I know Virginia is generally conservative (NOVA close to DC much less so). One other area we considered, western NC, is certainly at least as conservative (at least places outside Asheville). Let's not call it a "fixation" on tornadoes, but simply a concern (on my wife's part). She is smart and appreciates the relative presence, and lack of, of bad weather in the area. Right now we're seriously considering the short sale in Heritage Hunt (55+ community in Gainesville). I appreciate the fact that we wouldn't be going in to DC when traffic is bad (except perhaps by VRE train), but we'd be closer to Shenandoah, Winchester, etc., and this would be a second home for the next few years.

HH is plagued by high energy bills, and you are trapped in there during both rush hours. Golf Courses hemorrhages red ink.

Do you mean energy bills of the individual homes or the common areas? Any worse than for other homes in the area?
