How long is the average commute to McLean from:
Herndon, Reston, Chantilly, Centreville and Oakton? Also anyone know of the best routes? Is street driving faster than freeway from these towns?

Trying to locate affordable housing (rent $1,200 for 1/2 BR and shortest possible commute. Okay to laugh! An hour drive is short to me. Thanks!

Anyone of these areas should get you to McLean in about 30-40 mins.

I find the Dulles the easiest, but you pay for it and they talk about raising tolls. I also find 66 the most difficult if your commute will be during typical rush hour.

Best of luck

Yeah, that's what my experience was as well (Centreville to McLean 123 - pre-construction). Taking 66 and simply noticing which lane at what time was fastest moving (not switching lanes on-the-fly, but noticing over time which lanes tended to move fastest and planning to eventually get into those lanes each day at those spots - for example, coming home near the Nutley Street turnoff the far right lane would be relatively fast until about a hundred meters before the merge FROM Nutley while the far left lane(s) slowed down a LOT and, strangely, had accidents a lot a hundred meters or so further on - this type of situation appears in various spots on that route, both ways).

Default commute to McLean From FairFax

Hey thanks for your replies. Is the 123 still a nightmare? Hey you make it sound like a puzzle to solve re: which lanes are the fastest at certain times! What are your thoughts on living in FAIRFAX then driving NorthWest to McLean? Is it any faster driving WEST during rush hour? It seems like most folks want to go EAST into DC. Anyone have a story to tell about driving times from FAIRFAX to McLEAN? Thanks again!
