Want to learn more about fracking? Fracking is the process of injecting wells with water, sand, and chemicals at very high pressure. This process creates fractures in deeply buried rocks to allow for the extraction of oil and natural gas as well as geothermal energy.

USGS is holding a free program on fracking Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 7:00 PM. USGS is in Reston. Bring a photo ID (drivers license is fine). All visitors must enter at the Visitors Entrance and pass through a security screening process.

I haven't heard of any plans like that for VA. The USGS offers a free program every month on a variety of scientific issues. They like to focus on hot topics, which is probably why they chose it.

By the way--don't read too much into the note about bringing a license. It's just a standard security door, but this was something I learned the hard way last year when I took the bus and didn't happen to have my drivers license on me. They let me in, but said "next time young lady, bring some id!"

Whew! That's a relief. I mean, flaming tap water is cool the first few times, but after that...
