My wife and I have recently both gotten jobs in Alexandria off of King Street east of 395. We are not too familiar with this side of DC and are wondering what might be a good idea to look around to live. We have two kids, a 2 year old and a 10 week old. We will need to find child care. We are hoping to get a 3 br place for under $2000. Possibly more, depends on the cost of child care as well. We would also like to keep the commute to no more than 45 minutes. We are hoping to avoid the rough parts of the area.

Thanks

Maybe Burke or West Springfield? -especially if this is a long-term move.

Are you amenable to a townhouse? I suggest looking in the Fairlington area. Very family friendly, lots of nannies and nanny shares in the area, plus it is a short commute down King St.

Try looking in the North Springfield area (22151 is better than 22150) or the Kingstown area. I just saw a few 2b/2b on Military By Owner.
You can also use a Realtor to help you find some rentals. ...

You might look into the South Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The Bucknell Manor area is very convenient to Old Town Alexandria and appears to be in your price range, based on a quick check. Fairfax County Schools are good. Kids in Bucknell Manor either go to Belleview elementary or Bucknell elementary. The houses are relatively small but can be easily configured as 3 bedroom. Virginia Hills is another possibility. I'd stay away from anything right on Rt. 1.

My husband commutes from our home in Burke to just next to the King Street metro. It takes him at most 45 minutes, but he's going at the peak of rush hour (leaving at 8, coming home at 5:30). Very, very family friendly area (we're the odd ball young couple with no children in our neighborhood). I think you'd have to up your rental budget slightly though.
