I am surprised by answers. I have always lived in the bottom floor of my apartments:

1) Easier access
2) No climb for groceries and other stuff
3) Less risk in falling to the ground below
4) Although there is sometimes noise above, you can always contact the manager
5) Less time wasted overall

I didn't think they used cinder blocks in condos. I haven't even considered buying a condo because I'm afraid of the noise.

Can you still hear your neighbors at all?

We have friends who lived in a SFH for many years but downsized into a very lovely condo on a lower floor. The wife recently told us that they are going to sell and look for a place on a top floor because of the noise from the unit currently above them.

It's a townhouse, so neighbors are only on the sides, not top or bottom. The only time we've heard anything through the walls was when their stereo is blasting bass, or he plays the drums. Never hear the TV or talking or walking. They've had parties with 30 people, and we never heard a thing.

Not many places in this part of the country are made from cinder block. Our house was built in the 1960s and only has cinder block in the walls between the units.

the top floor is also the hottest unit in the building since it's the one closest to the roof. Good in the winter, not so good in the summer.

Sound transference between floors is one reason to chose a high-rise, which are built to much higher standards.

Pros/Cons no matter how you slice it. Besides noise, I would be concerned about all things water like tap, sewage and rainwater that turns into groundwater. On the top floor you have to be concerned about a leaky roof but that more bearable than dealing with sewage.

Ha, this gives me hope. When I move, I will make cinder blocks between units a requirement.

I will only live in top floor apartments! They are without question the quietest. Not to mention, I feel more secure than I would in a ground floor unit.

Top floor....all the way.

We are in our second apartment and picked the third floor even though there was no elevator - simply because we hate having people above us. Hearing people walking, stomping, exercising, vacuuming above you is a nightmare!!
