Is this from the storms that came through yesterday? It hasn't been 24 hours yet. I don't think your food would go bad that fast. After the derecho we waited about 2.5 days and what we lost we probably lost over the last half day. You posted last night just before 10 pm. When did you lose power?

I was thinking that, too. I would think food would be fine until Monday night if the refrigerator/freezer was kept closed.

Yay, power is back on, just over 24 hours after it went off! The ice cream was mushy so we ate some and tossed the rest.

Thanks again to all.

A little before 4 PM but I was anticipating that DV would not act quickly--during the derecho, my neighbors were out for nearly 5 days. I didn't expect it would be that long, but was concerned that they were not giving us an estimated time of service restoration, which is usually a bad sign. But glad it's back now.

I didn't respond earlier because I also couldn't understand why you were saying all food was going to be lost when your power hadn't even been out 24 hours (actually a lot less hours then that at the time you posted).

Glad to hear that you are back up.

That sucks - ours came back on at 6:30 am yesterday morning and we didn't have to toss anything. We had portions of our neighborhood that didn't lose power at all, but we were out for 15 hours - it was bizarre.

In June/July, we were out over 24 hours and decided to toss dairy stuff from the fridge.

I am starting to think we need a generator. These storms have been ridiculous.

Good reference for food safety: Keeping Food Safe During An Emergency

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Obtain dry or block ice to keep your refrigerator as cold as possible if the power is going to be out for a prolonged period of time. Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold an 18-cubic foot full freezer for 2 days. Plan ahead and know where dry ice and block ice can be purchased.
