The bay beaches are probably your best bet. Sandy Point, North Beach, and Breezy Point are all under 60 miles from Fairfax.

lisacardi -- Greenbrier State Park in Maryland has a beach on a man made lake. It's pretty nice. 45 miles from the Ashburn area.

If you want ocean beach, the closest to Fairfax will be Ocean City Maryland. It is still going to be a three to four hour drive (assuming the traffic is good) one way. Whether you can do it as a day trip is up to your energy level. I have a friend who recently did it (left around 2:00AM in the morning and came back around midnight). She said she would never do it again. It was so exhausting.

Good gracious, why on earth would she leave at 2:00 a.m. I mean, what did she do on the beach at 5:00-6:00 a.m.

When I go for a daytrip, I usually leave by about 6:30 a.m., arrive at OC by 9:30 (well, there is the Starbucks stop at 9:30). Find my beach, and by 10:15, I'm on the sand. I stay there until about 4:30, then I clean up, get some dinner at around 5:30, and hit the road by 7:00-ish getting me home NLT 11:00.

What did she do so early in the morning?

Not sure. Maybe she tried to catch the sunrise on the beach.
