I think the rule should always be no later than 9 p.m. It is a school night and many of us have to work early. Our previous neighborhood had signs posted with the hours being 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We didn't have any this year after about 8:45 p.m. So, we got lucky with that. I think you had every reason to be upset that it was so late. I guess I would be more understanding if it was a Friday or Saturday.

Nobody came by here after about 8:15. My son and his friends were back around 8. Kids
started coming around 5:45 or so.

Thanks, y'all!

(The wife seriously thinks that a darkened porch invites prowlers and burglars. I tell her that's what the alarm system and German Shepherd are for.)

I think the unofficial hours for trick-or-treating are between 6pm and 9pm. Kids started to come to our door around 6:15 and the latest was right around 8:45. At 9 we blew out the pumpkins and turned off the porchlight. We turned the light back on before we went to bed around 10:00.

I'm surprised they rang the doorbell. When I was young we only went to houses where someone was there to give candy. If the door was shut, we just skipped that house.

We actually surprisingly ran out of candy this year so turned off the lights earlier than "normal", however typically things come to a grinding halt around 8:30 anyway. Some parents bring really young kids around at, like, 6PM so I guess that's the start, however the end has always been 8:30-ish. We would have an absolute limit of 9PM in any case.

When we're done - for whatever reason - we turn ALL downstairs or front-facing lights off (exception - uncontrolled post lamp near driveway that does its own thing); a dark house works.

We had a group of kids come as late as 9:30 but we ignored the door. We were the poopers who did not hand out candy, we haven't done it for the past 2 years. The one year we DID hand out candy, we got maybe 6 kids the whole night. We live on a dead end so most people don't bother coming around LOL. Also, our dog tends to go crazy each time the doorbell rings. I swear we aren't grumpy though! Although, 2 years ago we did put a bowl out saying "please take!" and when we checked on it later, it was still pretty much full. More candy for us I guess! It was weird to have kids ring our bell so late last night, but my husband was in the shower and I was alone with the dog so I ignored it.
