I have started looking for homes in the DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia area as I am taking a job in Reston. However, my wife will be working in Bethesda at Walter Reed so obviously there is going to have to be some compromise on location for one/both of us. What cities/areas should we be targeting? I'm not sure what our budget is at this point but I think 300-400k is a safe assumption. Thanks!

I don't think there is anything in between Reston and Bethesda in your price range. The places in between (Potomac and Great Falls) are very expensive. One of you is going to have do a big commute - flip a coin. Here is what I would suggest looking at in Reston in your price range.

2305 HARLEYFORD CT, RESTON, VA 20191 | Listing Information | HomesDatabase.com
11128 HARBOR CT #11128, RESTON, VA 20191 | Listing Information | HomesDatabase.com

Tysons Corner is almost exactly between the two. The OP should be able to afford a condo in Tysons.

If you would drop her off at the metro, then maybe she would go along with this-

11579 EMBERS Ct, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS# FX7967413 | Redfin

If we are going to have to pick either Reston or Bethesda, I have a feeling that Bethesda will win. We have lots of friends in the area and my wife likes living right off of the metro. What kind of commute am I looking at if I am commuting from Bethesda to Reston Town Center, and want to be there around 7:30am?

Reston is MUCH cheaper than Bethesda. You will not find much, if anything, for $300K-$400K in Bethesda.

My husband used to commute from Reston into MD - MUCH better than the other way around. Move to Reston and drive to Bethesda, as the metro commute would be a massive pain in the rear because of the way the metro is structured (go into the city to transfer to another line).

Tysons or Merrifield area would work. You could definitely get a condo there, and probably a smaller(1500k sq. ft) townhouse too if your budget can go up to 400k. Inventory in the area is pretty low right now though unfortunately so if you see something you'll have to move fast.

Silver line is coming to Bethesda next year anyway.

OTOH, if one of you can swing a 6-2 shift or whatever, that's a factor IMO.

I think you mean "Silver line is coming to Reston..." Bethesda already has the Red Line. I know you know that stpickrell, but just want to point that out to OP, in case he's not familiar.
